About Me
Who I am
I am a Software Engineer who lives in Atlanta, GA and I have a beautiful wife and 3 children. I work for Cox Communications where I am the Senior Software Engineer for a telemetry team that monitors devices at the edge of our vast cable empire.
What I Do
My main interests are computer related. I enjoy writing software and combining hardware and software in new ways. I really enjoy cutting edge devices that push people to think about technology in new ways. I'm also very interested in woodworking and craftsmanship. I enjoy fixing things around the house and I love learning new things about carpentry, electrical, plumbing, HVAC and construction in general.
I read Make: Magazine and I enjoy listening to NPR. My favorite TV shows are Myth Busters, Frontline, How It's Made and The New Yankee Workshop.
Where I've Been
I was born in Orlando, FL and lived in Clermont, FL most of my childhood. I graduated from South Lake High School the first year it was open and attended Florida State University. I enjoyed FSU immensely and learned troves of information both in class and from my peers. I played Trombone in the Marching Chiefs for 5 seasons.
When I graduated in 1998, I took a job at Federal Express in Orlando where I was introduced to the corporate world. 18 months later I left to join a dot com which taught me how much I had taken for granted at FedEx (like getting paid on time). After 3 years times were very tough there and I was let go like so many people were in that era. I ended up at Cox in Atlanta and it turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to me.
It was in Atlanta that I met my future wife, Elizabeth, and her daughter Caroline. We were engaged 3 weeks later and married the following February. We have 2 more children now, Maggie who is 2 and Andrew Jr. who is 8 months old.
in 2004 I decided to go back to school and work on my MBA. I chose Georgia Tech because it has a stellar reputation in the world of technology development and scientific research. I graduated with a 3.76 GPA in 2005.
Where Am I Going
My goal is to find a position in management at Cox. I was a manager briefly before with 2 direct reports but due to some re-organization I ended up in a new team with no reports so I became a Software Engineer again. I really enjoyed my time in management and I felt like my people enjoyed my management style. My little team accomplished a great many things in our short run. We performed all development and provided 24/7 support for a telemetry suite that provides visibility into the very edges of the HFC network at Cox. I personally wrote the VoIP subsystem that is still in use today.
I've been striving since graduating from GT to find ways to apply what I've learned about Finance, Change Management, Organizational Behavior and many other fields. It's been difficult because of my position at the bottom of the totem pole. I recently changed positions at Cox in the hopes of furthering those goals.
